Practitioners & change-workers — Developmental Mastery
For practitioners & change-workers

You’ve done a lot of your own work. This is the next level of it.

Many of the coaches and therapists who come to me have already done years of their own work and are skilled at what they do. What they want is the next level: deeper change in themselves, and new capability in how they create change with clients. A coach uses methods and processes. Someone has to invent those, and that is what I do.

How I think about it

Understanding a pattern and changing it are different activities.

The most self-aware people can be the hardest to shift

Someone who can describe a pattern in precise terms, in themselves or in a client, may still find it running. For highly self-aware people, understanding comes easily, which makes it easy to mistake for change. The brain can build that loop very quickly.

This is the difference between intellectually thinking something versus actually feeling different, to the point where you start behaving differently. They’re completely different things. Anand Rao

What’s happening now, not the backstory

A familiar route in change work asks where a pattern started. My route starts with what is present in the body now; the history tends to resolve along the way.

I could go to my history and try and figure out why, but the only role of that is to try and change the feeling sense in the body. Or I could go straight to the feeling sense of my body and use these tools… Anand Rao

How long a pattern has run doesn’t set how long change takes

A pattern that has run for decades is often assumed to need years of work. In my experience the time change takes follows the time needed to learn the new thing.

…it only requires the time it takes and the energy it takes to learn the new thing. Not how long it’s been around. Anand Rao

Who learns from me

Practitioners come for their own next level, and their clients’.

For three years I taught at a coaching school, around thirty coaches a week. Psychotherapists and psychiatrists now come to me for their own development and for new capability with clients. I have also taught for adult-development researcher Terri O’Fallon, and gave a talk in the Stages International summer series.

What practitioners say

Coaches and therapists, in their own words.

I started the coaching process because I was doing ok but had a nagging sense that something was holding me back and I couldn’t (despite having a high degree of self-awareness and a fair bit of insight into developmental stages and a lot of coaching experience) figure out how to release some shackles that were holding me back. It was like driving a powerful car with the brakes on. Knowing about it isn’t always helpful in knowing how to resolve it. Debbie Fisher
Developmental coach, after six months
I’ve made more progress in 6 weeks than in 6 years and what’s been surprising is that it’s not just on the business side but a total reframing of work and life. I’ve been more creative, it all feels doable and I have much more agency. Debbie Fisher

What makes Anand stand out is his ability to create change by intervening at a process level rather than just content. I know very few people who can operate in this way… Mark Hawkswell
